

They existed in this world for more than 1500 years. Ghazals originated in pre-Islamic Arabia, developed in Medieval Africa, Spain, Persia, Turkistan, Afghanistan, Hindustan and Russia and ended in Europe. It is His ardence, affection and benediction once in a lifetime that flows through ghazals. Ghazals are Nature's wonderful creations in which the purest of passions, emotions and feelings are stored up so that grief-stricken human soul in loneliness can seek solace in it at any time as if in the presence of God. God stands just behind those who sing, so close, that we will wonder who actually sings. He has been honoured by Maharashtra State Urdu Academy.Music crosses borders of nations and oceans and reaches hearts of human beings in strange lands.

He wrote the play Mirza Ghalib which was staged at Fine Arts Drama Competition at Rastrapati Bhawan, New Delhi in 1957. He also started writing novels, and Kachchi Deewaren is one such famous book. Phoolon ki barsaat – a collection of ghazals was his first published poetry work. He got chance to meet some of the great writers while at Delhi, which influenced him a lot, and he too joined the same folk. It was during those days while at Delhi, he got introduced to the world of literature. He joined government service at the age of 18 in 1950, and worked in the Food and Marketing Department, in central government sector. Among his kids, his son Sameer Kabeer is also a poet. He married Akhtar Kabir in 1960 and had 7 children.

Apart from ghazals, he also authored several geets. Initially he was more interested in novels and stories, before he completely switched over to poetry, especially the ghazals. His published works include – Pehchaan – a collection of his ghazals published during his last days in 1999, Charon Aour – one more ghazal collection published in the late 1960s and Kachchi Deewaren – a novel published in 1958. He is best known for writing ghazals, and many of his ghazals have been popularized by famous ghazal singers like Jagjit Singh, Chitra Singh, Hariharan, Lata Mangeshkar, Pankaj Udhas, Salman Alvi, Chandan Dass, Munni Begum and Sabri brothers.
